2023 African Games: Black Princesses defeat Nigeria to clinch gold in Cape Coast

Ghana’s U20 female national team, Black Princesses, overcame Nigeria to claim the gold medal in the 2023 African Games Women’s football final at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Thursday evening.

In an electrifying night of passion and determination from the two sides, it was Ghana who bagged the ultimate after 120 minutes of football.

This is the second football gold medal for Ghana at the African Games since 2010. Coincidentally, Yusif Basigi, the head coach of the Princesses won the 2015 edition for the team with the Black Queens.

At the start of the game, it was Nigeria who looked dangerous in attack as they surged forward on multiple occasions, troubling Afi Amenyeku in goal for Ghana.

Through their consistent long-range drives, the Falconets opened the scoring secured through Edeh Njideka’s 23rd-minute goal.

Amenyeku failed to handle a long strike from midfield and Edeh reacted quickly to tap home the opener.

Nigeria held on for the half time break with the lead but in the second half, they struggled to dominate the game.

As Ghana began probing for the leveller, confidence and support from the filled Cape Coast Sports Stadium, inspired the ladies.

And the belief to win the gold medal motivated Tracy Twum who found the back of the net in the 77th minute, leveling the scoreline and propelling the game into extra time.

Ghana continued their attacking game plan and striker Mukarama Abdulai fired a low drive in the 99th minute to win the game for the Black Princesses.
