Black Stars next coach odds: Otto Addo leads list of favourites

Otto Addo is the front runner to become Ghana’s new national team head coach. The position became vacant after Chris Hughton was sacked on January 23, 2024 due to disappointing results at the recent Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) decided to disband Hughton’s entire technical staff after the Black Stars were eliminated in the first round of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. This outcome was expected given the team’s poor performance, prompting the GFA to outline plans to hire a replacement coach.

With less than one week left for the five-member committee to present their recommendation to the GFA Executive Council and Sports Ministry for final approval, rumors indicate Otto Addo leads the field of candidates under consideration. However, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum stated no final decision has been reached yet.

“The search committee has interviewed coaches who did not originally apply for the position, judging them on competence, qualifications, availability and likelihood to produce the results we hope for,” said Asante Twum. “If they determine Otto is the right choice, I’m sure they will justify that decision, though the process is still ongoing.”

Other Ghanaian coaches like Maxwell Konadu, George Boateng and Michael Osei have applied and interviewed for the role. If selected, some question whether Addo meets the predefined criteria of exceptional experience and proven track record of success.

Asante Twum responded, “Let’s be patient and allow the committee to finish their work. They will submit their report to the Executive Council, ranking the candidates in order of preference along with the rationale behind choosing each one, factoring in demands and working conditions.”

Whoever assumes control has massive shoes to fill, as Ghana’s national team performance has declined significantly in recent major tournaments. Over their last 12 matches at Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup events, the Black Stars have only managed two victories
