We need to set the foundations and improve for the future – Egypt’s Rui Vitoria

Egypt coach Rui Vitoria declined to comment on his future with the team after their Afcon elimination on Sunday evening.

The Pharaohs were knocked out from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 after losing to DR Congo on penalties.

Egypt qualified for the knockout stages after a series of 2-2 draws in Group B against Mozambique, Ghana, and Cape Verde respectively, before playing out another draw against DR Congo.

When asked about his future with Egypt in the post-match press conference, Vitoria said: “This is not the time for hasty decisions; we will think before any decision.

This is not the end; we did not expect the defeat. Bad luck was the reason for Egypt’s loss against the DR of Congo.”

“The players were very good, and this is football – it has both happy and sad times.”

“We prepared this team for the Africa Cup of Nations, but there are times when you put in all your effort and the result is not as expected. We need to look at our future goals.”

When asked if Egypt would lose its position as the most successful team in AFCON’s history, he responded: “We cannot be like that; history proves that Egypt is a very big team, but it has undergone many changes.

“We need to set the foundations and be better in the future.”
