Afcon 2023: 2021 exit will not repeat against Mozambique – Chris Hughton

Ghana coach Chris Hughton is confident his side will defeat Mozambique in their third group game at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Stars have only a point from two games and a victory against the Os Mambas will impact their chances of qualifying for the knockout stages in Cote D’Ivoire.

But at the back of Ghanaian minds, there’s a 2021 Afcon scare, where the Black Stars failed to beat Comoros to progress to the round of 16.

After losing 1-0 to Morocco, Ghana shared the spoils in a 1-1 game against Gabon and had to defeat the Island nation to qualify. But they failed woefully.

For Chris Hughton, the mistake of two years ago will not reincarnate against Mozambique on Monday evening.

“With regards to what happened two years ago, some players are here, some are not.

“Players get used to in their careers bouncing back from defeats and try to put what is in the past in the past,” Hughton told reporters at the pre-match press conference.

“When you concentrate on what happened in the past, you will let it affect your preparations

“We appreciate the past but we are only thinking of what is ahead, which will be a tough match.”

Ghana will also harbour a keen interest in the Cape Verde and Egypt game.

A win for Egypt will eventually push the Stars to the third place and they will compete with the  other five groups for the four available slots.
