2023/24 Caf CL: Medeama recover to down CR Belouizdad 2-1 in Kumasi for first group stage victory

Medeama fought back from a goal down to win 2-1 against CR Belouizdad on matchday two of the 2023/24 Caf Champions League on Friday evening.

At the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, the Mauve and Yellow played their hearts out in an exciting encounter against the Algerians.

After losing their group opener to African giants, Al Ahly, Augustine Adotey’s side needed to make a comeback to winning ways despite missing key man Jonathan Sowah in attack.

Felix Kyei kept his spot in the post, Jean Vital Ourega played in midfield while Daniel Lomotey led the attack.

Both sides commenced the clash in an attacking manner, probing for the opener but Belouizdad looked the more threatening side with their moves.

Medeama defender Emmanuel Cudjoe fouled Ishak Boussouf in the 18-yard box and Abdelraouf Benguit bagged the first goal in the 39th minute.

With Belouizdad now in the lead, the Ghanaian champions had a herculean task ahead in drawing level and winning the clash.

However, they delivered in being involved in the game when Daniel Lomotey equalled the scores before half time.

After the break, Medeama looked the bright side in the game as they continued their constant threats for the winner.

In the 90+4 minute of additional time, Kamaradini Mamudu clinched the winner for the Mauve and Yellow with a well-directed header after Kwadwo Amoako’s cross from the right flank.

Medeama have amassed three points from their first two group stage games and they play Young Africans on matchday three.
