It’s Comoros again! Ghana lose second 2026 Fifa World cup qualifier

Ghana have been defeated by Comoros in match-day two of the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifier in Moroni on Tuesday evening.

This is Les Coelacanths second defeat over the Black Stars in their last two meetings.

Myziane Maolida scored the winner in the 43rd minute for the hosts who needed a win to extend their lead in Group I of the qualifers.

Head coach Chris Hughton kept faith in Inaki Williams and Antoine Semenyo while Andre Ayew returned to the lineup.

The game began in a more reserved manner as both sides tried to warm themselves into the encounter.

In the seventh minute, Antoine Semenyo was setup by Inaki Williams but the forward failed to make the early moment for the Stars count.

Comoros attacked Ghana’s goal in the 19th minute when Youssouf M’Changama fired a long drive but Ofori stopped the effort.

The intensity of the game improved and the next minutes was filled with end to end action.

Ghana came close with Inaki, operating on the right wing as he sent a delightful cross but Jordan Ayew directed his header to the side of Comoros’ post.

The hosts reacted with another long range effort which deflected for a corner kick in the 23rd minute.

From the setpiece, Ofori was called to duty again as he tipped the ball for another corner for Les Coelacanths in the 26th minute.

The Black Stars won a freekick in the 31st minute but Jordan shot ended as a goalkick.

As the game edged closer to half time, Comoros found the opener.

Myziane Maolida went pass three players in the Ghanaian defence before slotting past Ofori’s left side.

Not the additional four minutes could change the result for the Black Stars.

After the break, Chris Hughton replaced Andre Ayew with Mohammed Kudus.

The Ghanaians commenced the second half as the team with the ball and Inaki Williams missed a good chance as his header flew off the goalpost in the 52nd minute.

The Stars kept probing for the leveller and Hughton made two changes.

Abdul Samed Salis off for Majeed Ashimeru, Ernest Nuamah for Antoine Semenyo to firepower the attacking play.

But that never troubled the Coelacanths who remained resolute in defence.

Ghana’s first shot on target came through Abdul Fatawu Issahaku but Comoros goalkeeper Salim Ben Boina was up to the task.

Not even the substitutions of Jonathan Sowah in the dying embers of the clash changed the result as Comoros matched on to six points in the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualification Group I.

Ghana remain at 3 points while Mali lie second in the standings.
