Ghana’s Mavis Owusu joins Saudi giants Al Hilal

Ghana international Mavis Owusu has joined the ranks of Saudi women’s Pro League powerhouse, Al Hilal FC.

The versatile defender’s transfer from Ghana Women’s Premier League champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies was completed after a successful negotiation process ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Mavis’ decision to join Al Hilal, yet to reveal the details of the contract,  comes on the heels of her outstanding performance with Ampem Darkoa Ladies, fondly known as ‘Nana Mma’.

As a key player and team captain, Owusu played a pivotal role in securing both the league championship and FA Cup during the 2022/23 season.

Furthermore, under Owusu’s inspiring leadership, Ampem Darkoa Ladies achieved a remarkable feat by winning the 2023/24 Wafu Zone-B Caf Women’s Champions League qualifiers. This victory earned them a coveted spot in the main tournament, which is scheduled to take place in Cote d’Ivoire later this year.

In Al Hilal, Mavis Owusu will reunite with her national teammates, Elizabeth Addo and Cynthia Konlan, further enhancing the representation of Ghana’s women footballers on the international stage.

Taking to social media to express her enthusiasm about this new chapter in her career, Owusu shared:

“I’m happy to announce my new journey at Al Hilal in the Saudi league. I’m grateful to God and the entire Ampem Darkoa Ladies management and teammates for their support.”

Mavis Owusu’s transfer to Al Hilal represents a significant milestone in her career, showcasing her dedication and skills in the sport. It also underscores her ambition to compete at a global level in the world of football.

While she did not feature for Ghana in the recent 2024 Women’s Afcon qualifiers against Rwanda, Mavis Owusu’s move to Al Hilal sets the stage for an exciting new phase in her football journey.
