Afcon 2023: ‘I don’t know so much about Mozambique and Cape Verde’ – Hughton confesses

Black Stars coach Chris Hughton has acknowledged that his knowledge of Ghana’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) group opponents, Mozambique and Cape Verde, is limited.

The draw for the upcoming 34th edition of the Afcon in Cote d’Ivoire placed Ghana in Group B alongside Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique, setting the stage for a challenging tournament.

Hughton commented on the draw, emphasizing that Egypt, with their extensive experience and numerous Afcon victories, presents a formidable challenge.

However, when it comes to Mozambique and Cape Verde, the coach admitted, “I don’t know so much about [them].”

He highlighted the importance of thorough preparation in the coming months, including studying their games to better understand the Black Stars’ less-familiar opponents.

“…we will do all of our homework over these coming months, watch their games from now, and before the tournament starts.

“But I think whenever a group comes out, you always think that it could have been better for us, and could have been worse for us,” Hughton noted.

The Black Stars are currently in the United States, preparing for friendly matches against Mexico and the USA as part of their build-up to the 2023 Afcon.
