2023/24 Caf CC: Dreams FC pitted against Club Africain and Rivers United in Group C

Ghana’s sole representatives in the 2023/24 Caf Confederation Cup, Dreams FC are set to test their mettle against formidable opponents in Group C following the draw held in Johannesburg on Friday.

In their debut appearance at this stage of the competition, the ‘Still Believe’ side will square off against Tunisian giants Club Africain, former Nigerian champions Rivers United, and fellow newcomers Academica do Lobito from Angola.

Dreams, who initially hesitated to confirm their participation, have exceeded expectations by reaching the “money zone” of the continental stage. However, they face a daunting challenge in their quest to advance further, given the strength of their group rivals.

Club Africain boasts a rich history as serial campaigners, having been crowned African champions in 1991 and securing the Tunisian league title an impressive 13 times.

Rivers United, fresh from their first Nigerian league victory in 2022, made waves by reaching the quarterfinals of the Caf Confederation Cup last season, highlighting their potential as strong contenders.

Academica do Lobito, like Dreams FC, are newcomers to this stage of the competition, adding an element of unpredictability to Group C.

Dreams FC’s path to the group stage was marked by a late decision to participate, followed by victories over Guinean side Milo FC de Kankan in the first qualifying round and Sierra Leone’s Kallon, securing their historic qualification.

The draw also unveiled the composition of three other groups:

GROUP A Al Hilal Benghazi, SuperSport United, Future FC, USM Alger

GROUP BAbu Salim SC, Academie SOAR, Sagrada Espéranca, Zamalek SC

GROUP C Rivers United, Club Africain, Dreams FC, Academica do Lobito

GROUP D – Sekhukhune United, Stade Malien, Diables Noirs, RS Berkane

The group stage action is set to commence in November, promising exciting matchups and intense competition in Africa’s premier club football competition. Stay tuned for updates and coverage as Dreams FC embarks on their continental journey.
