VIDEO: Kamal Sowah’s sensational strike earns Standard Liège win at OH Leuven

Kamal Sowah delivered the decisive blow as Standard Liège secured a 2-1 victory in their visit to his former loan club, OH Leuven, in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League on Saturday.

The Ghana international, who once called the King Power at Den Dreef Stadion his home during an impressive two-and-a-half-season loan spell, took to his former stomping grounds as one of the starting forwards for the visiting team. It was on this hallowed turf that he etched his name into the history books.

Sowah’s strike partner, Ivorian Wilfried Kanga, set the stage by opening the scoring just moments before halftime, giving Standard Liège the lead.

However, the OH Leuven side, known for their eye-catching team play, responded in the second half. Hamza Mendyl found the back of the net, leveling the scoreline in the 65th minute.

In a poignant moment, Sowah, the former OH Leuven star, clinched victory for Standard Liège in the 81st minute with a sublime left-footed strike from just outside the box.

Despite the euphoria of the moment, Sowah opted not to celebrate, a gesture of respect toward the club that had been his home for a significant part of his career.

This crucial goal marked the 23-year-old’s second for Standard Liège since his summer transfer from league rivals Club Brugge, where he had found himself lower down the pecking order.

With this win, Standard Liège currently occupy the 12th position in the 2023/24 Belgian Jupiler Pro League standings, following nine games of the season.
