Standard Liège sign Kamal Sowah on loan with permanent option

Standard Liège have officially unveiled the signing of Ghanaian international Kamal Sowah from fellow Belgian Jupiler Pro League side Club Brugge.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder’s move is on loan, with an option for a permanent transfer following the conclusion of the 2023/24 season.

Fergal Harkin, the Sporting Director of Standard Liège, expressed his enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, “Kamal will strengthen our attacking sector and increase competition within the group. His experience of the Belgian championship, his technical and physical qualities, his speed and his percussion will be additional assets for our team.”

Sowah’s journey in European football began after graduating from the Right to Dream Academy. He initially signed with English side Leicester City in 2018, following a stint with Ghanaian lower-tier club Sporting Club Accra. However, he gained considerable experience during loan spells at OH Leuven in Belgium, featuring in 72 matches, contributing 13 goals, and providing 10 assists over two seasons.

In 2021, Sowah secured a permanent move to Club Brugge, where he made a strong impression, featuring in 53 matches, scoring 2 goals, and providing 5 assists. He made a particularly strong impression last season in the Uefa Champions League under the guidance of coach Carl Hoefkens, a mentor he is now reuniting with at Standard Liège.

Kamal Sowah, who has earned one senior international cap with Ghana, was also part of the Black Stars squad that competed in the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar, adding international experience to his impressive football career.
