2023 AfconQ: We respect Ghana, but we can make history – CAR coach Savoy

Central African Republic (CAR) coach, Raoul Savoy has expressed unwavering confidence in his team’s ability to secure a vital victory against Ghana in the 2023 Arica Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers on Thursday, September 7.

The highly anticipated match is slated to take place at the revered Baba Yara Sports Stadium, where the Black Stars have maintained an impeccable record, remaining unbeaten for over a decade.

The stakes are sky-high in this Group E clash, with Ghana needing only a point to clinch their ticket to Cote d’Ivoire, while CAR is in dire need of a win to secure their own qualification.

Acknowledging the formidable prowess of the Black Stars, Savoy, in his official pre-match press conference on Wednesday, remained steadfast in his belief that his players possess the potential to bring an end to Ghana’s unblemished record in Kumasi.

In his words, “I know what exactly my players can do tomorrow, but we have the full respect for Ghana. They are far better than us as a nation, as a football nation, and as a team, but football is the most lovely sport in the world.”

He continued, emphasizing the unpredictability of the beautiful game, stating, “Every time, every day we have surprises. It is not about confidence; it is about respect for the opponent…[I will] push my players to do their best tomorrow and try to write history.

“Ghana is used to qualifying after the 4th day, but here, they are obliged to negotiate their qualification on the last day just like us so you can understand that things have changed. I tell you again, we only came here to win and qualify.”

The Ghana-CAR showdown is scheduled to kick off at 16:00 GMT.
