2023 AfconQ: Jordan Ayew captains, Ati Zigi in Ghana goal for CAR decider

Ghana coach, Chris Hughton has entrusted the captain’s armband to Jordan Ayew for the critical 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier against Central African Republic (CAR) at the illustrious Baba Yara Sports Stadium this afternoon.

The forward, who has been in impeccable form for Crystal Palace, will lead the squad in lieu of his brother, Andre Ayew, who will begin the match from the substitutes’ bench.

In the pivotal goalkeeping position, Hughton has opted to maintain faith in Lawrence Ati Zigi, choosing him over the returning Richard Ofori.

The defensive unit features a formidable lineup, with Alidu Seidu, Baba Abdul Rahman, Alexander Djiku, and Joseph Aidoo forming a robust four-man backline.

Elisha Owusi earns a noteworthy start, marking his first appearance in the starting lineup since the international friendly against Switzerland in November last year. He will partner Abdul Salis Samed in central midfield, while the dynamic duo of Osman Bukari and Jordan will operate on the wings.

The responsibility of spearheading Ghana’s attack falls to Atletic Bilbao striker Inaki Williams, with the creative Mohammed Kudus positioned just behind him, tasked with orchestrating the midfield and unlocking CAR’s defense.

Ghana enters this critical encounter needing, at the very least, a draw to secure their slot from Group E for the prestigious Cote d’Ivoire 2023 Afcon, scheduled for January next year.

The match is set to kick off at 16:00 GMT, as both teams vie for a coveted place in the continental football extravaganza.
