2023/24 UEL: Kudus sparks West Ham’s turnaround win, forcing own goal and scoring

West Ham United, powered by Mohammed Kudus, orchestrated a comeback to secure a 3-1 victory over Serbian side TSC Bačka Topola in the 2023/24 Uefa Europa League clash on Thursday night.

Making his first start for the Hammers since joining Ajax, the Ghanaian forward was a crucial figure in the team’s attacking efforts throughout the match at London Stadium.

Despite their dominance, West Ham initially struggled to convert their barrage of chances, and the tide turned dramatically when midfielder Petar Stanić capitalized on a defensive error by West Ham captain Angelo Ogbonna to give the visitors a surprise lead.

However, David Moyes’ side regrouped swiftly and mounted a comeback with two goals in just four minutes.

The first came from an own goal by TSC Bačka Topola’s left-back, Nemanja Petrovic, who inadvertently deflected the ball into his own net while attempting to thwart Kudus from equalizing from close range.

Shortly after, Kudus displayed his scoring prowess with a well-placed header from a James Ward-Prowse corner, propelling West Ham into a 2-1 lead.

A late header by Tomáš Souček sealed the 3-1 win as last season’s Europa Conference League champions launched their Europa League campaign with a triumphant start.

Mohammed Kudus delivered a full-throttle performance for West Ham in the 2023/24 Uefa Europa League Group A opener, leaving an indelible mark on the memorable comeback victory.
