2023/24 GPL: Bofoakwa Tano edge out RTU with late penalty drama

Bofoakwa Tano marked the second match-day of the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League (GPL) with a gripping 2-1 win over Real Tamale United (RTU) on Friday.

This victory was a momentous occasion for the Hunters, as they played their first topflight match at the Sunyani Coronation Park in 16 years, delighting their home crowd with an exhilarating encounter.

Captain Saaka Dauda electrified the atmosphere, showcasing his skill by converting a magnificent free-kick just 14 minutes into the game, propelling Bofoakwa to a dream start.

However, RTU had their moment in the 62nd minute when Baba Kushibo delivered a pinpoint cross, allowing Mohammed Hardi Abdulai to restore parity by slotting the ball into the back of the net.

The match witnessed a late dramatic twist as referee Eric Sefa Antwi pointed to the spot, awarding Bofoakwa a penalty. This decision arose from a contentious incident in the RTU box, where goalkeeper Nana Yaw Afriyie, obstructed an attacker while attempting to block a cross.

Substitute striker Steven Owusu displayed composure as he calmly stepped up and converted the penalty in the 89th minute, deceiving the RTU shot-stopper to secure a 2-1 triumph for Bofoakwa Tano.

Bofoakwa Tano now boast four points from their first two games in the GPL, following their goalless draw away to Great Olympics on the opening day.
