Ampem Darkoa pip Delta Queens, qualify for 2023 Caf Women’s Champions League

Ampem Darkoa Ladies secured their ticket to the 2023 Caf Women’s Champions League after a tightly contested final against Delta Queens on Thursday.

The Ghanaian champions exhibited their superiority throughout the West African Football Union (Wafu) Zone-B qualifiers, leaving a trail of impressive victories in their wake.

The journey to the grand finale at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State, was marked by a series of resounding wins for Ampem Darkoa. They claimed a 4-2 victory against Amis du Monde, a 3-1 triumph over Atletico FC D’Abidjan, and a commanding 6-1 performance against Sam Nelly FC.

However, it was their encounter with the Nigerian champions and hosts, Delta Queens, that would decide their fate. In a tense battle, Ampem Darkoa managed to secure a 1-0 victory.

The solitary goal materialized in the 43rd minute, courtesy of Ophelia Serwaa Amponsah, who expertly nodded home from close range. Nancy Amoh’s perfectly executed free-kick had created the opportunity, catching the hosts’ defense off-guard.

This hard-fought victory guarantees Ampem Darkoa Ladies a coveted place in the third edition of the Women’s Champions League finals, slated to be held in Cote d’Ivoire later in November.

The achievement marks a historic milestone for the team, who will make their debut in the prestigious Caf Women’s Champions League.

It’s a redemption story for ‘Nana Mma,’ as they had fallen short in their inaugural attempt.

The third-place playoff witnessed Ivorian side Atletico FC securing a resounding 3-0 victory over Sam Nelly FC of Benin.

Additionally, Ampem Darkoa Ladies’ striker, Mary Amponsah, emerged as the top scorer of the tournament, clinching the golden boot with eight of the 14 goals scored by her side. With their heads held high, Ampem Darkoa Ladies are now set to embark on their historic journey in the Caf Women’s Champions League proper, aiming to make their mark on the continental stage.
