2023 Caf WCL Qualifiers: Ampem Darkoa dominate Atletico FC, reach semis

On-fire Mary Amponsah netted a hat-trick.

Ampem Darkoa Ladies have solidified their place in the semifinals of the West Africa Football Union (Wafu) Zone-B qualifying tournament for the 2023 Caf Women’s Champions League by triumphing over Ivorian side Atletico FC D’Abidjan with a 3-1 victory on Friday.

Eminent forward Mary Amponsah, renowned for her complete dominance in the earlier 4-0 win against Amis Du Monde, extended her prowess in tonight’s contest at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State – Nigeria.

Mary, who previously netted all goals in the opening win, swiftly maneuvered ‘Nana Mma’ into the lead with an impeccably executed strike merely two minutes into the game.

Demonstrating her supremacy, she further enhanced the advantage in the 15th minute.

Bolstering her already impressive performance, Mary capitalized on a precise cross from Ophelia to secure a hat-trick, amplifying the scoreline to 3-0 by the 28th minute.

Despite maintaining control over the game, the Ghanaian champions displayed occasional profligacy.

Atletico FC managed a consolation goal within the final seven minutes of regulation time.

Mary Amponsah picked up the Best Player award for the second successive time.

Emerging as Group B leaders with an impeccable record of two wins, Ampem Darkoa Ladies are now set for a semifinal clash against Sam Nelly FC of Benin, the second-ranked team from Group A. The match is scheduled to kick off at 17:00 GMT on Monday, August 28.

The ultimate victor of the Wafu Zone-B tournament will earn the exclusive opportunity to compete in the third edition of the Caf Women’s Champions League, slated to unfold in Cote d’Ivoire later this year.
