Ampem Darkoa Ladies kicked off their campaign in the West Africa Football Union (Wafu) Zone-B qualifying tournament for the 2023 Caf Women’s Champions League with a resounding 4-2 victory over Amis du Monde in Nigeria on Sunday.
The Ghanaian champions made a strong statement as striker Mary Amponsah stepped up with an exceptional performance, securing all four goals.
This victory kick-starts their quest for Wafu Zone B’s single ticket to the third edition of the continental club competition, set to take place in Cote d’Ivoire later this year.
Displaying their determination from the outset, ‘Nana Mma’ swiftly gained an advantage with a well-placed header by Mary just after the kickoff whistle blew.
However, Amis, the Togolese champions, responded with an equalizer in the 17th minute.
The balance was short-lived as a goalkeeping mistake allowed Mary to secure her second goal, adding to Ampem Darkoa’s lead with apparent ease only four minutes later.
As the teams entered halftime at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State, Ampem Darkoa held a 2-1 lead.
Mary Amponsah’s exceptional performance continued into the second half, completing her hat-trick just ten minutes in.
Demonstrating agility and anticipation, she capitalized on a low cross from the right with a simple touch, extending Ampem Darkoa’s lead to 4-1.
Amis du Monde salvaged a consolation goal in the 84th minute, but Ampem Darkoa’s 4-2 victory sealed their position atop Group B. Their next challenge awaits against Ivorian side Atletico FC on Friday, August 25.
Mary Amponsah’s remarkable performance earned her the coveted Woman of the Match award, highlighting her pivotal role in Ampem Darkoa Ladies’ impressive start in the Wafu Zone-B qualifying tournament.
