#FootyTransfers: Patrick Kpozo joins Baník Ostrava on 2-year deal

Ghana defender Patrick Kpozo has completed a transfer to FC Baník Ostrava in the Czech Republic.

The left-back arrives from Moldovan champions FC Sherif Tiraspol for an undisclosed fee.

Kpozo recently earned his first international cap with the senior national team, the Black Stars in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier away to Madagascar. Straight after, he moved to Ostrava to complete the switch.

The 25-year-old finally signed a two-year contract on Thursday, after passing necessary medical tests.

“Due to his valid contract with the big Moldovan club, Baník and Šheriff first had to agree on the terms of the transfer, so that the player would sign a two-year contract with Bazale on Thursday after completing all the examinations,” the Czech First League outfit stated in an official announcement.

Luděk Mikloško, FC Baník Ostrava’s head of the sports also said: “We had been eyeing him since the winter and already during the winter break we were considering his arrival, but at that time we didn’t want to reach out to the team. We continued to monitor him throughout the spring.

“Now the negotiations were partially accelerated by health problems on our left side, but that was not the only reason. He is still a relatively young player who played tough matches in the Europa League last season, for example against Manchester United, and we believe that he will be another improvement in the quality of the squad for us.”

Patrick Kpozo is a protege of Inter Allies FC, but has been playing in Europe since his teenage years. He spent the main part of his career so far in Sweden with AIK Stockholm, Lulea, Östersund, and briefly worked in Tromsö, Norway. Since last January, he has been a player of Sheriff Tiraspol and in the past season he played for them in almost all the matches in European cups, including against Manchester United, San Sebastian, Partizan Belgrade and Nice or against Viktoria Plzeň in the preliminary round of the Uefa Champions League.
