Afcon 2023Q: In-form Paintsil feels no pressure to score against Madagascar

Following a successful club season, Joseph Paiqntsil feels no added pressure or expectation to find the back of the net when Ghana face Madagascar in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers.

The Black Stars require just one point to confirm their place in the Cote d’Ivoire tournament. They are set to play guests to the Barea in a penultimate Group E game at Stade Kianja Barea in Antananarivo on Sunday, June 18, 2023.

Paintsil expressed confidence that the Black Stars would work together as a team to secure the necessary victory.

In response to inquiries regarding expectations to score goals based on his record for KRC Genk during the recently ended season, he stated during a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, “for me, I’m not under pressure to score or assist.”

“My style of play is always geared towards assisting, defending and fighting for the team – that is my task.

“Scoring is a great achievement but what really matters is teamwork and performing well as a unit. Ultimately, what counts most is producing results for Ghanaians.”

With two rounds remaining, Ghana leads Group E standings with eight points from two victories against Madagascar and Angola and two draws versus the Central African Republic and Angola respectively.
