“Football has changed, manage your expectations” – Hughton to Ghanaians

New Black Stars coach, Chris Hughton has cautioned Ghanaians to be measured in their expectations of the team ahead of Thursday’s meeting with Angola.

Hughton, 64, was appointed Black Stars Coach after German-born Ghanaian tactician Otto Addo left his post after Ghana’s exit from the 2022 Fifa World Cup.

The former Brighton manager joined the technical setup of the Black Stars in March 2022 as Technical Advisor and was with the team at Qatar before being handed the leading role.

Hughton will be taking charge of his first game as Black Stars manager on Thursday, 23rd March, 2023 when Ghana take on Angola in the 2023 Afcon qualifiers at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Reflecting on the task of managing the Black Stars and meeting the expectations, Hughton cautioned Ghanaians to be measured in their expectations of the team saying football has changed and there are no minnows in today’s game.

“The biggest challenge is expectations. I’ve been here long enough and I know the history of Ghana from past world cups and that brings huge expectations,” Hughton told SuperSport TV.

“However, the levels have changed now. What you might have seen a good few years ago, where teams were winning 4-0, 5-0, 6-0 against countries regarded as the smaller footballing nations, that’s changed now.”

“So many teams have improved now. If you look at our Afcon qualification group, it’s never an easy group. Previously, it would have been looked at as an easy group so the expectations have got to be measured,” Hughton added.

Ghana are joint top of Group E in the ongoing 2023 Afcon qualifiers ahead of fellow group members, Angola, Central African Republic, and Madagascar.

The Black Stars host Angola in match-day 3 of the qualifiers on Thursday, 23rd March 2023 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
