2023 AfconQ: Hughton praises Black Stars players for fighting spirit

Coach Chris Hughton lauded the efforts of his Black Stars team after they picked four points from their doubleheader against Angola in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers.

Ghana won the first leg 1-0 in Kumasi in what was the first game of the Hughton era. The Black Stars then managed to claw back from a goal down to earn a point in Luanda yesterday to keep them top of the table in Group E.

Ghana fell behind after Lucas Joao scored a penalty kick in the 51st minute but got the equalizer in the 72nd minute through substitute, Osman Bukari.

Addressing the press after the draw in Angola’s capital, Hughton praised the team’s fighting spirit after falling behind.

“We proved we have a big spirit in the team and in both games, scoring late goals. Angola are a very good side and we are very happy to have four points from the two games.”

“The penalty was for us disappointing but we reacted really well and this shows a team that has a good spirit and good quality to get a result,” Hughton stated.
