Accra Lions hold Kotoku Royals thanks to late Abass Samari penalty

A late penalty strike by Abass Samari helped Accra Lions hold Kotoku Royals to a 1-1 draw at home in their second meeting in the 2022/23 betPawa Ghana Premier League (GPL).

Starting the second round of the season on Saturday, it was the turn of the Accra-based side to host the newcomers who beat them 1-0 in the corresponding fixture at Cape Coast on the opening day of the campaign last September.

Kotoku Royals’ newly-signed boy Francis Andy Kumi continued his impressive start by handing the visitors the lead at the Accra Sports Stadium in the 32nd minute. The striker headed home a cross from the right.

The bottom club looked to be heading for a win until the closing stages when they fouled Baba Apiiga to concede a penalty.

Abass Samari stepped up and converted from the spot in the 90th minute to salvage a point for Lions.

The stalemate means Accra Lions move their tally to 28 points while Kotoku Royals move to 11 after 18 games.

Abass Samari – who is now on 7 league goals – was selected man-of-the-match.
