Senegal reward coach Aliou Cisse with improved contract ahead of World Cup

Aliou Cisse has added an extra year to his existing contract as head coach of Senegal.

The 46-year-old – in charge since 2015 following a promotion from the West African powerhouse’s U-23s – has led the lions of Teranga to back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals, winning the 2021 edition at the expense of Egypt in February this year.

Cisse went on to beat the Pharaohs once more to a 2022 World Cup slot in the African playoffs held in March.

The ex-Senegal captain thus qualified the side to a successive World Cup after leading them at the Russia 2018 edition.

Ahead of his final squad announcement for the Mundial in Qatar, the Federation of Senegalese Football (FSF) on Thursday rewarded Aliou Cisse with improved terms in his last contract signed in September 2021 which was to expire in 2023.

Cisse – who was on a $27,000 salary – will now earn more after extending to remain in charge until 2024.

Senegal will be competing in Group A of the 2022 World Cup against hosts Qatar, Ecuador and the Netherlands.
