Official: Jojo Wollacott joining Black Stars camp for World Cup opener

Injured Ghana goalkeeper Jojo Wollacott has been cleared to travel from England to Qatar to support his national team colleagues ahead of their opening match at the 2022 Fifa World Cup.

An unfortunate finger injury during warm-up for a club game, approximately 48 hours before the Black Stars’ final tournament squad was submitted to Fifa, prevented the 26-year-old from making an outing at the global showpiece, having been the first-choice shot-stopper since making his debut in November 2021.

Wollacott’s setback required surgery which ruled out every chance of being considered for inclusion in Ghana’s 26-man squad for the World Cup.

Even though Wollacott will not be able to play an active role, he has been permitted to join the Black Stars base in Qatar for the opening match against Portugal on Thursday, November 24.

According to a GFA statement on Monday, Wollacott “intends to come over and motivate his colleagues” ahead of the game.

He is expected in Doha on Tuesday, November 22 – two days before the opener.

Ghana take on their Portuguese counterparts at Stadium 974 in Doha.

The Black Stars will also play against South Korea and Uruguay to complete their games in Group H.
