Hearts mark 111th anniversary with barren draw against Karela

Marking their 111th anniversary, Hearts of Oak settled for a goalless draw with Karela United in a feisty 2022/23 Ghana Premier League (GPL) match-day 6 encounter on Sunday.

The Phobians had hoped to crown the celebrations with a third straight win under new coach Slavko Matić and a first-ever against the visiting Aiyinase-based club who are gradually proving a bogey side since their promotion to the top flight.

Hearts are yet to prevail over Karela in four previous league meetings  – lost one and drawn three.

And the record was preserved by the coach Kobby Mensah-led side.

But Hearts boss Matić expressed contentment with the performance of his charges.

“I am happy with how my players played in the game against Karela. Their attitude, responsibility and will to succeed showed in the game.

“We did not get the desired result though, but we played better. We will continue to work for the next game,” the trainer stated after the keenly-contested match.

Hearts of Oak now sit in 10th position with 9 points while Karela United – who have one more – move to 7th after 6 games.
