2022 World Cup: Black Stars goalkeeper Wollacott suffers injury just before squad announcement

Ghana international Jojo Wollacott’s World Cup dream has been thrown into doubt after the goalkeeper picked up an injury prior to Charlton Athletic’s game in the English League One Saturday afternoon.

The 26-year-old was withdrawn after hurting his finger during the warm-up to the 3-3 draw away to Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium.

Craig MacGillivray filled in between the sticks as the Black Stars stopper’s participation in Qatar 2022 was left hanging in the balance.

Charlton manager Ben Garner said after the game: “We’re praying for good news. He’s got a scan as soon as we get back to London. He just caught one on the end of his finger. We’re just hoping it’s a ligament or something like that. A little sprain in there.

“We’re just praying for good news. He’s due to fly out tomorrow and join up with Ghana. Hopefully, we get good news.

“He’s a really level-headed guy, Jojo. He was disappointed before the game and frustrated by it. I don’t think he was in a position to be on the bench so we made the decision to put an extra outfield player on.

“He’s a little bit more positive in there now and we’re really hopeful it’s positive news and he can travel tomorrow [Sunday].”

Wollacott has since his Ghana debut last year established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper and would definitely be in coach Otto Addo’s final squad for the Mundial once declared fit.

The squad will be made public on Monday, November 14 with the Black Stars team converging in Abu Dhabi for a final preparatory game against Switzerland three days later.

Ghana will be competing in Group H of the Qatar 2022 tournament against Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay.
