Legon Cities lost the plot in their opening match of the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League (GPL) as they finished with 9 men and a 1-0 defeat to Medeama SC at El-Wak Stadium Sunday afternoon.
It was locked 0-0 for large spells of the game until defender Kofi Asmah stunned the hosts by nodding home for the Mauve and Yellows in the 68th minute from a corner kick.
Things then went worse for coach Maxwell Konadu’s side. The Royals had two players sent off concurrently – right-back Michael Ampadu and midfielder Michel Otou were shown the red card by referee Charles Bulu.
Nine-man Cities still chased the game but their numerical disadvantage had a telling effect.
Midfielder Kwasi Donsu came very close to making it 2-0 for the visitors in the 89th minute but was denied by a heroic save from Cities goalkeeper Sylvester Sackey.
Medeama SC went on to record a solitary goal victory – the right start new coach David Duncan was hoping for.
Next up on match-day 2 is a trip for Legon Cities who go up north to face debutants Tamale City FC while Medeama welcome Real Tamale United (RTU) to the Tarkwa Akoon Park.
