‘I’m not inviting Nico Williams to block Ghana’ – Spain coach Luis Enrique

Luis Enrique has explained that calling Nico Williams to the Spain squad now has nothing to do with the potential of losing the talented winger to Ghana.

The 20-year-old is brother to Iñaki Williams who recently switched international allegiance from Spain to the country of their parents Felix and Maria.

Nico who is described as the more skillful and creative of the two brothers has shown fine form this season – scoring in his last two games for Athletic Bilbao.

The Williams brothers were both on target in a 3-2 win over Rayo Vallecano in the LaLiga on Saturday night.

But on Sunday evening, they went separate ways as Iñaki headed out to Paris before connecting to Le Havre to join the Ghana camp while Nico will be setting off in the other direction to the Spain camp a few kilometres outside Madrid on Monday.

“I’m not doing this to stop him [Nico] going with Ghana; he’s young and a very interesting player,” Spain coach Luis Enrique said as quoted by The Guardian.

“He’s playing more often with Athletic now. He’s progressing wonderfully. I like him enormously.

“We’ve had him in the junior squad and have been following him for a long time.

“I reckon the family will be delighted: imagine the party if they both go to the World Cup. And they reach the final, well, that would be the absolute business,” Enrique added

Nico Williams will be chasing his debut when Spain take on Switzerland and Portugal in the Nations League during this September international break.
