Asante Kotoko crowned 2021/22 Ghana Premier League champions

Asante Kotoko were officially crowned champions of the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League (GPL) in front of their fans at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium Sunday night.

The title race was decided with three games remaining when the Porcupine Warrior snatched a 1-1 draw away to AshantiGold in an outstanding fixture on Thursday, June 2.

But the record league champions – 24 – had to wait until their final home game for a befitting coronation.

It was a party atmosphere in Kumasi that saw coach Prosper Narteh Ogum’s boys spice things up with a 3-0 match-day 33 victory over Elmina Sharks.

Left-back Imoro Ibrahim opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a stunning free-kick.

Imoro went on to record his 9th assist in a second half which had Cameroonian striker Georges Mfegue coming off the bench to score a brace in the final 12 minutes.

Subsequently after the final whistle, GFA officials – led by President Kurt E.S Okraku – oversaw a presentation ceremony with captain Ismail Abdul Ganiyu leading Kotoko to finally lay hands on the coveted GPL trophy after an 8-year wait.

Asante Kotoko received GHS 250,000 as prize money and will be Ghana’s sole representatives in the 2022/23 Caf Champions League which starts in a couple of months.

The 2021/22 GPL comes to an end next weekend with champions Asante Kotoko playing guests to Accra Lions.
