RSC Anderlecht midfielder Majeed Ashimeru’s omission from Ghana’s roster to face Nigeria in the 2022 Fifa World Cup playoffs has been slammed by ex-national team captain Asamoah Gyan.
The Black Stars squad was finally released by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) early Tuesday – barely three days to the opening leg of the back-to-back ties with the Super Eagles.
Irked by the snub, the legendary Ghana national team striker took to his official Twitter to make his feelings known, forcefully with a “nonsense” tag.
Per Gyan’s assertion, Ashimeru – who has been in tremendous form in the Belgian topflight lately – is the second-best midfielder in the squad behind Arsenal star Thomas Partey.
In a now-deleted tweet, he stated: “This guy Majeed Ashimeru is the best midfielder in Ghana, after Thomas Partey, PERIOD. I have kept quiet on this but this nonsense must stop. Smh”
The 24-year-old has made 31 Jupiler Pro League appearances with three goals and two assists to his name.
Gyan followed up with another tweet retracting the “nonsense” tag:
I still insist that Ashimeru deserves to be in this current Black Stars BUT am sorry for using the word “ Nonsense “ in my statement so I unreservedly withdraw that word , I was carried by my emotions .

Majeed Ashimeru – who was also snubbed for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon – made his senior debut in May 2017 in a friendly against Benin.
Ghana will host the Super Eagles of Nigeria on Friday, March 25 at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, with the second leg four days later in Abuja.
The winner picks one of Africa’s five slots to the 2022 Fifa World Cup set for Qatar later in November.
