AshantiGold defeat King Faisal to stop 4-game winless stretch

AshantiGold snapped a four-game winless streak with a 2-0 win over regional rivals King Faisal to open match-day 20 of the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League (GPL) Friday afternoon.

Both sides produced a poor display in the opening half of the game at Len Clay Stadium but the Miners managed to take the lead just before the break after winger Yaw Annor was fouled just outside the visitors’ penalty area.

Youngster Kamaradini Mamudu stepped up and lifted a free-kick that shaved the underside of the crossbar and into the top corner. 1-0 the half ended.

The quality of play marginally improved after recess but clear-cut chances hardly came by.

But in the 81st minute, the second goal arrived. A perfectly lifted ball well in behind King Faisal defenders by substitute Ebenezer Appiah found forward Isaac Opoku Agyemang who calmly slotted past onrushing goalkeeper Frank Boateng to cushion the lead for the hosts.

The 2-0 win is AshantiGold’s first in their last five league games. They now move to 25 points and are now four adrift King Faisal after 20 matches.

Both sides tie on the head-to-head rule as Faisal also won 2-0 in their first meeting of the season on match-day 3.

AshantiGold’s Kamaradini Mamudu won the NASCO man-of-the-match award.
