Olympics end first round in third position after Sharks win

Great Olympics completed the first round of the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League (GPL) with a 1-0 win over bottom club Elmina Sharks.

The Dade Boys had to wait till the 90th minute to grab the three points at the Accra Sports Stadium – their seventh win of the season.

Daniel Adrian Adjetey was the hero for the home side in a gruelling encounter that saw Elmina Sharks display resolute defending for several parts of the game.

The Elmina-based side were hoping to claim their fourth win of the season but it only ended up being their 12th loss.

Olympics dominated the game in the first half but missed the half-chances most times.

The story was similar to that of the second half as Sharks kept their defensive shape intact. The visitors looked confident in attack on few occasions and could have scored but they also had their own woes upfront.

The match had to wait till the latter stages and that’s where Oly improved in rhythm and intensity.

That led to Adrian Adjetey’s goal in the 90th minute and they held on to pick the three points at home.

From the win, Great Olympics – now on 28 points – have moved to third in the league standings and will play hosts to RTU when the second round resumes.

Elmina Sharks are the last team on the league log with 11 points.
