2022 WCQ: ‘My role is to support Otto Addo and staff for Ghana-Nigeria playoffs’ – Chris Hughton

Chris Hughton says he will be supporting Otto Addo and the Black Stars technical team when Ghana plays Nigeria in the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifying playoffs in March.

The former Brighton and Hove Albion boss was announced as Technical Advisor to a three-man technical team set up specifically for the games against the Super Eagles.

Some Ghanaians were confused over his appointment as Black Stars Technical Advisor when the Ghana Football Association (GFA) already had Bernhard Lippert as Technical Director.

The GFA had to release a statement explaining the two roles while others think the Technical Advisor role given to Hughton is only to usher him in as the long-term Ghana coach.

When asked by The Chronicle about his role with Ghana, Hughton said: “I am going to be involved with Ghana.

“My father hailed from Ghana and Ghana have two World Cup playoff games against Nigeria.

“I am involved in that.

“There is a coach but I have the title of technical advisor and my role will be to support the coach and the staff for these two games.

“But I am very much looking to get back and have a lot to offer.”

The Black Stars will host Nigeria at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on March 25 in the first leg of the African playoffs for this year’s World Cup before travelling to Abuja for the reverse fixture four days later.

The winner over the two ties picks one of Africa’s five tickets for the 2022 World Cup to be hosted in Qatar in November and December.
