Ghana’s Afcon 2021 failure down to poor management – Mamadou Gaye

African Football Expert, Mamadou Gaye has blamed poor management for Ghana’s early exit at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

The Black Stars were dumped out of the competition at the group stage for the first time in 16 years following defeats to Morocco and debutants Comoros, and a draw against Gabon to finish bottom of Group C.

The four-time African champions’ showing at the 2021 Afcon is their worst performance in the tournament’s history, not winning a game for the first time ever in their 23 participations.

“I think what went wrong with Ghana was poor management. It was shocking to see the Coach [CK Akonnor] being fired and replaced by someone who was on holiday somewhere,” Gaye told Empire FM.

“Everybody remebers how Milovan Rajevac left Ghana after the World Cup in South Africa.

“It was totally wrong to bring someone like that hoping that he will achieve a miracle.”

Ghana’s Ministry of Youth and Sports has asked the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to review the “work and capacity” of the Serbian coach after the embarrassment in Cameroon.

The GFA says it will meet on Wednesday, January 26 to deliberate on the reports of the technical team and the management committee of the Black Stars.

This comes after local media reports over the weekend claimed the GFA had already sacked Rajevac for the poor showing at the Afcon.
