Defiant Milo insists he is going nowhere after Afcon 2021 disaster

Ghana coach, Milovan Rajevac insists he will remain in charge of the Black Stars at least for the upcoming African playoffs to the Qatar 2022 Fifa World Cup.

The Serbian was quizzed about his future after supervising what is now the Ghana senior national team’s most disastrous campaign in its 23-time Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) outing history.

Four-time champions Ghana were sent packing without a win in Group C of the 2021 Afcon in Cameroon by debutants Comoros who pulled a shock 3-2 win at Roumdé Adjia Stadium in Garoua.

In his post-match reactions, Rajevac – who returned to the Black Stars job for the second time in September 2021 – said he is focused on achieving his primary target of taking Ghana to Qatar 2022.

“I will not resign…”

“I took this job to take the Ghana team to the 2022 Fifa World Cup. That is my primary target [not winning this Afcon].

“And as you know, I only came to Ghana three-and-a-half months ago. So you cannot expect some magic things in such a short period of time,” said the 68-year-old.

“But this competition was a good platform for us, so we want to learn from it and complete these next qualification matches in March and try to go to the World Cup.”

Touching on the defeat, he stated: “We didn’t start the game against Comoros how we wanted and we conceded an early goal. It was a poor start for us and then the red card to Andre Ayew changed everything.

“I think Comoros deserved this win because they played very well than us,” Rajevac added.

Qualifying for Qatar 2022

Ghana will learn their 2022 Fifa World Cup playoffs opponents on Saturday, January 22. The draw will be conducted in Douala, Cameroon.

The 10 qualified teams will be divided into two levels based on the official Fifa ranking, published in November 2021.

The five highest-ranked teams will play against the five least ranked teams (the first leg will be played at the home of the lower-ranked teams).

According to the ranking published on the 19th of November 2021 after the last round, the distribution of the teams on the two pots shall be as follows:

Level 1: Senegal, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Nigeria

Level 2: Egypt, Cameroon, Ghana, Mali and DR Congo
