Afcon 2021: Mike Stankovic returns as Black Stars assistant coach

Ghana have appointed Serbian-American Mike Stankovic as one of the assistant coaches for the Black Stars at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals.

The ex-defender comes in to fill the void created by the unavailability of local man Otto Addo whose permanent job at German Bundesliga giants Borrusia Dortmund prevents him from joining the Ghana senior national team at Cameroon.

Stankovic – who is already in the Black Stars camp at their pre-tournament training camp in Doha, Qatar – is in familiar territory.

In 2010, Stankovic served as an assistant to Milovan Rajevac on the Ghana national football team at the 2010 Fifa World Cup where the team missed a semifinal berth to Uruguay in a cruel fashion.

Rajevac and Stankovic’s mutual understanding saw the two move to manage the Qatar national football team after the former left the Black Stars job.

Stankovic is one of four additions to the Ghana backroom heading for the Cameroon Afcon. The 65-year-old is joined by Awal Kamin Salifu – a Performance/Video Analyst and two scouts.

Ghana will be facing Morocco, Gabon and Comoros in Group C of the 2021 Afcon.

The tournament kicks off Sunday, January 9, 2022.,
