Afcon 2021: Abagna to miss rest of tourney with toe injury

Ghana’s David Abagna is to miss the rest of the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) after suffering a toe injury.

The attacking midfielder sustained the injury to the last toe of his left foot on Thursday, January 13, during the Black Stars’ final training at Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium annex for their second game in Group C of the Afcon last Friday.

That saw Abagna – who made the bench in the group opener against Morocco – drop out of Ghana’s squad that drew 1-1 with Gabon.

The decision – which initially went without any explanation – has now been made official with the player marked to be sidelined for four to five weeks.

Portions of a publication on the GFA website said:

“Team Doctor Adam Baba Mutawakilu has advised a non-weight bearing and strapping of the left foot, awaiting healing of the injury.

“The injury to the toe was confirmed after a scan of the left foot at a hospital in Yaoundé on Saturday.”

The Abagna development is the second confirmed injury blow – after a hamstring to Baba Iddrisu – to be confirmed in the Ghana camp.

David Abagna is one of the five home-based players that made Ghana’s final squad for the 33rd Afcon in Cameroon. He scored 8 goals for Real Tamale United before departing for the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
