Kotoko held by RTU, extend winless streak to three matches

Real Tamale United (RTU) ensured Asante Kotoko further dropped points on match-day 8 of the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League (GPL) after holding out for a 1-1 draw at Baba Yara Sports Stadium Wednesday evening.

The Porcupine Warriors have now failed to win in their last three straight games – after a draw at Karela and the shock defeat to King Faisal on match-day 6.

The draw leaves Prosper Narteh Ogum’s team three points away from Aduana FC and King Faisal, who are first and second, respectively – with a game in hand.

Kotoko skipper Ismail Ganiyu missed from the spot in first-half stoppages when goalkeeper Yaw Osei brought down Cameroonian striker Georges Mfegue in his penalty area.

His compatriot Franck Etouga Mbella gave the Porcupine Warriors the lead just three minutes after the break when his effort hit the post before rolling across the line.

RTU talisman David Abagna thrashed into the right top corner from a rebound to level for the visitors in the 70th minute.

The goal is Abagna’s 7th of the season and now joint top scorer with Great Olympics’ Maxwell Abbey Quaye.

RTU held on for the point after a surprise 1-0 defeat to Medeama SC at home last weekend.

Asante Kotoko will next play Legon Cities away while the ‘Pride of the North’ host Elmina Sharks at Aliu Mahama Stadium.
