“I prefer not to speak about the referee” – ‘fuming’ Mourinho on Afena-Gyan red card

AS Roma boss, Jose Mourinho declined to discuss the decisions that got young Ghana forward Felix Afena-Gyan sent off during his side’s 2-0 victory against Spezia on Monday night.

The 18-year-old – a 64th-minute substitute – was handed a second yellow card seconds after he thought he had scored a third in injury time.

Mourinho was left incensed after Afena-Gyan raced through in the dying moments before slamming the ball into the roof of the net.

The teen striker wheeled away in celebration, but his joy soon turned to dismay as the referee disallowed the goal and sent the player off with a second yellow card after judging that he had handled the ball deliberately in the build-up.

In typical Mourinho fashion, the Portuguese trainer was livid on the touchline and gestured furiously after the decision had been made.

In a post-match conference reaction, Mourinho stated: “I prefer not to speak about the referee. In my opinion, he did okay.

“I did not see either of the two incidents that led him to book Felix and I would rather not say anything.

“But, that being said, we seem to continue to have this incredible record of picking up yellow cards. Even the yellow cards before, to Vina and Kumbulla … it’s too much.

“We are a bit of a naive team, we are certainly not aggressive, and yet we still have this tally of yellow cards,” the Roma boss added.

Defender Chris Smalling opened the scoring after six minutes before Roger Ibanez sealed the points in the second half for AS Roma.
