Medeama denied by stoppage-time GoldStars equalizer

Medeama SC’s first home game in the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League (GPL) ended with a late drama as newcomers Bibiani GoldStars scored in stoppage time to secure a point Tuesday afternoon.

The match-day two fixture finally happened at the Akoon Community Park in Tarkwa after the venue was initially rejected prior to the start of the new season due to club licensing requirements.

But an availability challenge at Mauve and Yellows alternative venue – the Cape Coast Stadium – forced the league organizers to reassess the Tarkwa venue and eventually pass it fit to host games.

The game ran barren until the 82nd when experienced striker Amed Touré – who came on for Godfred Abban in the 56th minute – netted the opener.

As it looked like Medeama were easing to a hard-fought solitary goal victory, another second-half substitute, Joshua Akoto snatched the equalizer for GoldStars in the final of a three-minute additional time.

Bibiani GoldStars return home with a precious point from their Western North rivals, ensuring they are unbeaten (on four points) in their first two games in the Ghanaian topflight.

Next up for GoldStars is a clash with leaders Asante Kotoko at Dun’s Park on Friday, November 12.

Bottom-placed Medeama, on the other hand, play guests to Eleven Wonders on Sunday.
