Abbey Quaye hat-trick as Olympics tame Lions 3-1 in home opener

Great Olympics earned a thrilling home victory, defeating newly-promoted Accra Lions FC 3-1 in their 2021/22 Ghana Premier League (GPL) match-day two clash Sunday night.

A Maxwell Abbey Quaye hat-trick – the first by any player in the new league campaign – ensured the Dade Boys sealed the three points at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The 23-year-old forward put the hosts ahead after 21 minutes with a curled effort from distance which went into the far post before going in.

Moments later, Abbey Quaye unleashed a similar effort in the same direction, but this time the ball came off the upright.

Accra Lions came back fighting in the second half and managed to scrape in the leveller through a close-range header from captain Richmond Tetteh Ankrah in the 57th minute.

On-song Abbey Quaye then fired a quick brace to seal the win for Olympics.

He capitalized on a mistake by Lions keeper Appiah Kubi who passed the ball to an Olympics player right in front of the penalty box to restore the lead in the 64th minute, 2-1.

Olympics’ third arrived four minutes later through a well-taken spot-kick from Abbey Quaye who completed his hat-trick and a good night’s work for Annor Walker’s side

Maxwell Abbey Quaye picked up the NASCO man-of-the-match award.

The victory sees Olympics move up to 3rd in the league standings with 4 points from two matches.

Next up for Great Olympics is a stay in Accra to play guests to Legon Cities while Accra Lions also play away at the same venue against Dreams FC on match-day three in the coming weekend.
