Afcon 2021: Asamoah Gyan hopes to make Black Stars squad

Ghana football star Asamoah Gyan is hoping for a spot in the Black Stars’ squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Cameroon early next year.

If named in Charles Akonnor’s list, the 35-year-old will be participating in his eighth straight Afcon tournament.

Ghana’s all-time top scorer has played in two finals which the Black Stars lost to Egypt in 2010 and were defeated on penalties by Ivory Coast in 2015.

But now, the Legon Cities forward hopes to play another Afcon with the aim of winning the title on the third time of asking.

“I feel like I did my best. In football, anything can happen. I have been closer to it on so many occasions; I went to the final two times,” Gyan told 3Sports.

“2015 was our chance but we blew it away but I always believe in destiny. I did what I had to do to make sure Ghana wins it.”

The tournament kicks off in January so the Black Stars squad should be announced by mid or late December.

Despite admitting that he is not at his best presently, Gyan added that there is more time for him to get back in shape for selection.

“There might be surprises, anything can happen. I may not be up now but you might see me in January who knows,” he stated.

The joy of winning an international title for Ghana is still an achievement Gyan has dreams of since his debut in 2003.

Maybe the next Africa Cup of Nations might be his lucky moment. That’s if he gets into Akonnor’s team for Cameroon.

The tournament, postponed twice due to wet weather concerns and Covid-19, will run from January 9 to February 6, 2022.
