RTU end 8-year wait for Ghana Premier League promotion
Their last GPL action was the 2012/13 season and suffered relegation with just two points.
Real Tamale United (RTU) are back in the Ghana Premier League after 8 years away after finishing top of Zone One of the 2020/21 Division One League on a dramatic final day.
In June 2013, the Pride of the North slipped from the Ghanaian topflight for the second time in their history (the first being in 2011 after a 33-year stay) and had since struggled to move up the ladder.
But on the final day of the 2020/21 campaign, RTU finally ground their way to Premier League thanks to a 2-0 win over Unity FC which gives them the promotion ticket via the head-to-head rule.
RTU were two points behind rivals Tano Bofoakwa who could only draw 0-0 away to Berekum Arsenals.
Both teams tied on 65 points after 30 games but RTU’s head-to-head advantage over the Sunyani-based club sees them confirm a return of GPL action to the Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale for the first time since going down after the 2012/13 season.
Real Tamale United (RTU) thus complete the Ghana Premier League promotion cast for the 2021/22 season, joining Zone Two winners Bibiani GoldStars and Accra Lions from Zone Three of the Division One League.
