Fulham loan out Jerome Opoku to Vejle Boldklub

Ghana defender Jerome Opoku has completed a season-long loan move from English Championship side Fulham FC to Vejle Boldklub in the Danish Superliga.

The 22-year-old, comfortable either at centre-back or on the left side of defence, has yet to make a first-team appearance for Fulham, although he has played three times in EFL Trophy ties for their under-21s’ side.

However, Opoku has enjoyed successful loan spells at Accrington Stanley and Plymouth Argyle in the past two seasons and has decided to move to Denmark for further first-team football.

This past season, he spent most of the campaign with Plymouth Argyle, making a total of 33 starts and five substitute appearances in the English League One.

In the agreement, Vejle Boldklub have an option to make the deal permanent next summer should Opoku’s loan go well. He has been training with the club this week as all parties were waiting for the paperwork to be finalized.

“I believe I can contribute here. The club has good facilities and a clear footballing philosophy. Both appeal to me greatly,” Opoku told Vejle’s website.

“I will let the coaching staff judge my potential, but I am ambitious.

“Vejle Boldklub is a club that has shown it can develop young players in a competitive environment and that was a big reason for choosing to come here. I look forward to pulling on the red shirt and fighting for a first-team spot,” he added.

He could make his Velje debut this Sunday afternoon when they host Brondby in their third game of the 2021/22 Danish Superliga. They currently sit bottom of the standings after two straight defeats.

Jerome Opoku came close to his senior international debut with Ghana in March but UK travel restrictions to COVID-19 high-risk countries forced him to decline an invitation for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations double-header qualifiers against South Africa and Sao Tome.
