Karela United defeated 10-man Bechem United 2-1 at CAM Park to hand themselves a first win after six matches in the second round of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League (GPL) Sunday afternoon.
Going into the match-day 23 encounter, the Passion and Pride side had not won since March 6 when they overcame Aduana FC 2-1 at home and ended the first round of the campaign on top of the league.
Karela’s fortunes, however, dwindled since the start of the second round, with coach Evans Adotey’s men recording three drawn games and two defeats.
Leading scorer Diawisie Taylor – whose goals had dried up during the poor patch – found his scoring boot against the Hunters this time as he fired home a penalty in the 19th minute.
Karela’s lead was cut short 10 minutes later by a header from Bechem centre-back Kofi Agbesimah.
By the 40th minute mark, the visitors were reduced to 10 men with their skipper Moro Salifu shown the red card by referee Selorm Kpormegbe.
Despite their numerical advantage, Karela huffed and puffed in search of another goal. And redemption finally came in the 75th minute through substitute Reginald Thompson who had come on for Kwame Boateng earlier on.
Karela right-back Augustine Randolf was adjudged NASCO man-of-the-match.
The 2-1 victory moves Karela one place up into 5th on 37 points while Bechem stay 7th with 33 in the league standings after 23 matches.
