#GPLwk22: WAFA stun Berekum Chelsea in five-goal thriller

WAFA SC recovered from an opening-minute blip to hand Berekum Chelsea their first home defeat of the season on match-day 22 of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League (GPL).

It was a five-goal game split 3-2 in favour of the Academy Boys at the Golden City Park Friday afternoon.

Kickoff was initially delayed due to a clash of shirt colours with the visitors forced to change from white into their predominant red kits.

Berekum Chelsea took an early lead with forward Bright Amponsah scoring after just 25 seconds – the fastest goal so far this season.

Amponsah was picked out by Collins Ameyaw and he received the midfielder’s pass with incredible chest control and fired a shot into the leg of goalkeeper Osei Kwadwo Bonsu but was on hand to complete the rebound, giving the Bibires the lead.

The early goal unsettled WAFA but they managed to recover and snatched the equalizer on 21 minutes through Justus Torsutsey who was left free to connect to a cross pass from the left.

Three minutes later, Berekum Chelsea failed to deal with yet another low cross – this time from the right – with Torsutsey turning the provider for Enock Asubonteng to finish off and give WAFA a 2-1 lead.

Heading towards halftime, WAFA conceded a penalty after Bright Amponsah was brought down.

Osei Kwadwo Bonsu saved Stephen Amankona’s original penalty, but the spot-kick to be retaken because the WAFA goalkeeper stepped off his line. Amankona changed the direction of his kick in the second attempt and found the back of the net. 2-2 after 44 minutes.

Parity did not last beyond two minutes of second-half action as WAFA SC punished the Bibires with yet another goal created from the flanks.

Lawrence Agyekum outwitted his markers on the left and sent a low cross with Prince Anane failing to clear the ball which fell in front of Abdul Basit Issah who made no mistake in blasting home from close range.

WAFA managed to control the game and were handed a late scare which had goalkeeper Osei Bonsu failing to complete the match. He had to be stretchered off after receiving a knock around the throat area.

Eight extra minutes were allowed by referee George Vormawor but coach Prosper Nartey’s side managed to win and hand the Bibires their 9th ever defeat at the Golden City Park in their GPL history.

The 3-2 victory takes WAFA SC to 32 points, five better than Berekum Chelsea after 22 matches.

Scorer of the winning goal, Abdul Basit Issah, was adjudged NASCO man-of-the-match.
