Barreto says Kotoko players “must fight each game” in GPL title chase

Asante Kotoko coach Mariano Barreto has set his sights on winning the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League (GPL).

The new gaffer in his first interview with the team’s media has made his thoughts clear on what he expects from his charges.

Barreto held his first training session Monday at Adako Jachie and will be leading the Reds in the league’s second round.

The Portuguese gaffer has indicated his ambitions of not settling for second best with the Porcupine Warriors.

“So what the fans can expect, nothing special… What they can expect (from the team) is hard work, discipline and trying to help in the development.

“Asante Kotoko has only one target, win. Second place will be nothing for us; it’s the first for us. So it is a good challenge,” Barreto stated.

“I know my players and I had a short meeting with them. We gave them a message about what they need to do. They must fight each game.

“We will give everything we have on the field. We know in football we cannot win all games. But if somebody must win points from us, it should not be because we didn’t fight,” he added.

Barreto was appointed as Asante Kotoko coach alongside two foreign assistants who will work with Johnson Smith and Abdulai Gazale.

Miguel Bruno will be the video analyst and the first assistant coach and Pedro Manuel is the physical trainer and the injury prevention coach.

Kotoko are currently lying third on the league standings and have a game in hand against Bechem United.

Based on that, a win against the Hunters moves them to second place but they have got to beat Olympics, who are behind league leaders Karela United.
