#GPLwk9: Kotoko hold WAFA to 1-1 draw at Sogakope

Asante Kotoko, for the first time, scored and picked a point at the dreaded WAFA Park as they held WAFA SC to a 1-1 draw on match-day 9 of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League Sunday afternoon.

It was a strikers’ delight as Daniel Lomotey and Kwame Opoku both scored brilliant goals for their respective sides for the spoils to be evenly shared.

The Porcupines had failed in five attempts score or get a result since the Academy Boys, formerly Feteh Feyenoord, moved to Sogakope.

Kotoko showed resilience and fight at the WAFA Park after looking up for the slaughter in a difficult first half.

WAFA dominated the opening 45 minutes but could only show that with one goal – a delectable lob by Daniel Lomotey from inside the penalty area over goalkeeper Razak Abalora who was caught off his line in the 29th minute. The goal was Lomotey’s 8th this season.

Kwame Opoku nearly equalized right after restart when he was put through on goal by Emmanuel Sarkodie but his effort was denied by teenage goalkeeper Boliver Sarfo Owusu who blocked the shot at the near post for a corner kick.

Kotoko struggled with possession in the first half but improved markedly after the interval, taking the game to their hosts most times.

And their reward came in the 62nd minute when Kwame Opoku fed on a pass inside the box and hit home the equalizer – his sixth goal of the campaign – at first post.

WAFA made several attempts to restore the lead but Kotoko’s valiant rearguard led by shot-stopper Abalora kept them at bay and succeeded in rescuing a point on the road against the Academy Boys for the first time since 2005.

Augustine Boakye of WAFA was adjudged NASCO man-of-the-match.

With a game in hand, Asante Kotoko go 7th on 13 points and remain one behind WAFA who sit just above them on the league log after match-day 9.

Asante Kotoko’s outstanding game away to Ebusua Dwarfs is scheduled to be cleared on Wednesday, January 20.
