Still, I’m Black Stars General Captain – Gyan insists

Asamoah Gyan is adamant he remains the General Captain for the Ghana senior national team, the Black Stars.

The legendary striker was ‘elevated’ to the position after relinquishing the substantive captain role to Andre Ayew prior to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament.

There has been a change in the leadership of the Black Stars technical team with CK Akonnor who took over from Kwasi Appiah going on to announce a new captaincy order just last month.

Akonnor maintained Ayew while naming Thomas Partey and Richard Ofori as his deputies. There was no mention of the ‘General Captain’ position with many assuming that role no longer exists.

This even generated discussions within in the local media with Gyan’s business manager Samuel Anim Addo even backing the move by the new Black Stars gaffer as apt, adding that the player’s camp never liked the ‘General Captain’ idea.

But Gyan stance seems to differ from his manager who is also a member of the GFA Executive Council. The 33-year-old believes he remains General Captain of the Black Stars until he is told otherwise.

“It looks like [I am no longer General Captain of Black Stars] but they [officials] have not said that they are giving that position to someone else so I think I am still the General Captain.

“That is the position they gave me. I know that right now they have named captains of the team but I want them to tell me that this player is the general captain because they put me there,” Gyan told Adom TV.

He continued: “I am usually consulted by management with ideas because of my experience in the national team. I came to the national team in 2003. Where were the current breed of players then? So they know that I know a lot of things.

“There are some trivial issues that I am usually consulted for my advice. With what I have achieved in the national team, you cannot make a decision and leave me in the dark.”

“Right now, I am at home. If I am given the general captain, I will feel some way about it but since I have not been told that it has been given to someone else, [I am still general captain],” Gyan added.

Asamoah Gyan is the record goalscorer of the Black Stars with 51 goals.
